Facebook turns your iPhone portrait mode images into 3D photos

Facebook has launched a new tool for iPhones called 3D Photos. The feature lets you upload portrait mode photos on Facebook, and turn them into 3D photos on your news feed. It uses artificial intelligence to add 3D effects to your images, and your friends will then be able to view these photos in 3D as they move their phone, or a VR headset around.

It works exactly like you pan around a panorama image on Facebook. When portrait mode photos are uploaded, Facebook will respond to movements of a mobile device and give a sense of depth to the image. The format is also compatible with Firefox on Oculus Rift, and Oculus Browser on Oculus Go.

The feature is compatible with iPhones with dual cameras. This includes the iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models. Facebook mention that for better results with 3D effects, the ideal distant from the subject should be about 3-4 feet, which will make the image ‘pop’ out.

Facebook also provided some instructions on how to use the feature to get the bust results. According to the suggestions, subjects and materials with ‘some texture’ on them, something with solid edges, could offer better results. Sharing 3D image is a simple process, just like you add a new post. However, in this case, tap the three dots, followed by ‘3D Photos’ and select the portrait mode photos that you have clicked using the iPhone. Next, check the preview, and post it on your timeline.
